A trip down
Market Street,
San Francisco (1906)
This film print from April 1906 is a scan of 35mm material held by Prelinger Archives in San Francisco.
It was scanned by Adrianne Finelli at Internet Archive on October 11, 2018 using IA's Lasergraphics ScanStation scanner set at 5120 x 3840 and scanned to 16fps. Due to Final Cut Pro limitations, this full-width scan is 4096 x 3072 pixels wide and every second frame is doubled for a playback frame rate of 24fps.
While an exact recorded date isn’t know, this film was seemingly recorded only days before an earthquake and subsequent fire that devastated a vast amount of San Francisco, including Market Street. There’s something somewhat eerie about seeing it so active and bustling in this video for it to then be barren and empty a mere few days later.
